Diaper Bag Checklist Canada (Hospital Bag for Baby)

Congrats mamma! You are getting into a new phase of life! At this time, a lot of questions can pop up in your mind. One of the popular questions may be: ' What should I pack in my baby's diaper bag? ' Don't worry! New Mothers Forum is there to help you in answering your questions!

When to Start Packing for my delivery?

In ideal cases (In the case of preterm labor, this may vary), you can start buying things by the 33rd week. By 35th or 36th week, you can be all set to welcome your LO!!

Things to Pack for your baby

✔ Diaper Bag 

A Diaper Bag will be one of the most useful things for packing all the necessary things your LO needs. It has got long-term uses.

✔  Stroller & Car Seat

A Car Seat is a mandatory requirement in most countries for safety reasons.

You have 3 options:
  • Buy a Stroller with Car Seat (Travel System): You will find Stroller + infant car seat as a single package. The car seat fits in the stroller, in this model.
  • Buy a lite stroller (more compact & needs less space) which is compatible with a car seat 
Note: You can fit in only an infant car seat in a stroller

Both of the above models can be very convenient to use especially in the winter, as you may not have to take the baby out from the car seat in order to place him/her in the stroller.
  • Buy Car Seat & Stroller separately: You can go for car seats that are suitable for long term use + 2 in 1 or reversible stroller (which can be used in the pram mode)(look for compact options).

Stroller with Car Seat / Travel System

Car Seat

A Car Seat is something your LO is going to be using for a long time, so go for long-term options. All these models can be used from your baby’s birth, till he/she needs a car seat.

* This category of strollers is not bulky compared to the ones which you get along with travel systems
* Compatible with some infant car seat models mentioned below or you can fit in car seat with the help of a stroller adapter (Only infant car seats will fit into a stroller with/without a car seat)
* Can be suitable for long term use till your baby needs a stroller (Supports up to 50-55 lbs)
* Cheaper compared to buying a travel system

✔ Diapers (New Born Size)

  • It is not advisable to buy a lot of newborn-size diapers as your LO will grow up soon!
  • If your baby weighs more than 2.5 kg in the last scan (if you have a big baby waiting for you!) before delivery any 1 of these 3 is recommended as buying more than 104 may be a wastage
  1. Huggies (count 84): We had purchased this, baby didn’t get rashes, very good one!
  2. Pampers (count 84)
  3. Pampers Baby Dry (count 104)
  • If your baby weighs less than 2.5 kg (you have a small baby waiting for you) in the last scan before delivery, you can go with 128, or 136 as the unit cost may be lower

✔ Wipes

As of now, we have purchased 3 different brands of Wet wipes, three of them were found to be of good quality, and the price was also comparable.
✔ Receiving blanket / Swaddle Blanket

Both Receiving & Swaddling blankets can be used to swaddle the baby. Many of the hospitals provide Receiving blankets for swaddling, you can take them if needed
  • Swaddling keeps your LO cozy & gives a soothing effect to her. 
  • The Baby gets the same feeling as she is in the womb when you swaddle her. 
  1. Simple Joys by Carter's 7-Piece Flannel Blanket : We purchased this one. We used it mainly for toweling our baby after bathing her, served the purpose, make sure you wash in cold water.
     2. Clara Jones Unisex 6-piece Flannel Blanket: This type is used in hospitals, lengthier & thicker compared to the previous type


Swaddle blanket: Used this for swaddling our baby, it was easy to use

✔ Sleepers 

Sleepers cover the whole body of the baby, including the arms and legs.
  • Don't stack up your shelves with too many newborn dresses as your baby may grow very fast. 
  • We always buy dresses that are a size ahead of our baby's age. For eg: When she was 2 months old, we mostly bought dresses that were of 3-6 months size.

✔ Bodysuit/Onesies

This is a shorter dress, it is easy to dress up your cute LO with these! Listing below a few good options & Bestsellers:

Full Sleeve:

✔ Formula

  • It is good to have a few Formula bottles as they can be used if there is an issue with breastfeeding
  • Breastfeeding is most recommended for newborn babies, but don't get tensed if it doesn't work out in the initial stage! Nurses will be there to help you. The Formula Bottles you carry may also help
  • You can go with any of the below brands, later, based on your baby's preferences, you can change the brand
  1. Enfamil A+ Baby Formula (Ready to Feed) 
  2. Similac Pro Advance Step 1 Baby Formula (Ready to Feed)
We had purchased both of the above, but my baby was not much interested in both of these

     ✅  The first 2 models are convenient and ready to use
     ❌  Had to buy Nipple separately
     ❌  Have to discard leftover formula once opened, so there are more chances of wastage 


✔ Feeding bottle
  • It is better to go with glass bottles than any others
  • Bottles may not be mostly required in the hospital (especially if you are going with the Ready to feed formula bottles) however it is good to have it with you. This may be useful if you plan to pump breastmilk and feed your baby in the hospital
  1. Philips Avent Natural Baby Bottles (Bestseller): We had purchased this once but then switched to Glass
  2. Philips Avent Natural Glass Baby Bottles

✔ Changing Pad / Changing Mat

This can be used for changing diapers. You can always keep one in the diaper bag as you may need this to change your LO's diaper while traveling. You may also need this in the hospital.

Thick changing pad (This type can be good for household use, for hospital use/travel this may not be required):
Cloth type changing pad/changing pad liners (This type can be great for household use, and travel use, can also be used as a changing pad liner which can be used as a sheet for the thick changing pad mentioned above):

✔ Washcloth/Burp cloth


Can be used to wipe the little mouth of your LO!

✔ Socks, Mittens, Cap
